Good speckled trout bite in Sarasota
Clients on fishing charters in Sarasota experienced very good action on the deep grass flats near Big Pass on the north end of Siesta Key. Speckled trout in particular pleased anglers casting Bass Assassin jigs and live shrimp. Trout to 22" were landed along with bluefish, jacks, and ladyfish. The key to the good fishing was schools of small bait fish that came in from the Gulf of Mexico on the incoming tide.
The technique that was most effective was to drift submerged grass beds in 6' to 9' of water. Live shrimp were free-lined behind the boat using no weight as well as fished under noisy corks. Artificial lures also produced plenty of fish, with the jig and grub combo being the most effective. Glow and red gold shiner 4" Bass Assassin Sea Shad baits on a 1/4 ounce jig head worked well this week.
