Small sharks are plentiful in the Gulf of Mexico and quite a few come inside the passes and into Sarasota Bay, especially in the warmer months. The grass flats just north of Siesta Key are a prime spot. They are caught randomly buy anglers fishing with both live and artificial baits and can be targeted using fresh cut bait such as ladyfish and Spanish mackerel. Sharks in the ten to forty pound range put up a tremendous battle on light spinning tackle and are always a hit with the youngsters. While sharks can be great eating, I release them all.
