Sheepshead showing up in Sarasota
It looks like the winter/early spring run of spawning sheepshead has beun in Sarasota. Big Pass, which is at the north end of Siesta Key, has deep water, good current flow, and loads of rocky structure. These are perfect conditions for excellent sheepshead fishing! The fishing in Sarasota has been terrific the last few years and should be quite productive once again this year. It is fairly sinple as well, shrimp, either live or frozen, is fished on the bottom using just enough weight to get down there. As in all fishing there are little nuances. Timing can be important; some tidal flow is good but too much will result in difficult conditions and a lot of snags. Mangrove snapper and gag grouper will also be caught by anglers targeting these tasty saltwater panfish.
